Or do you not know that as many of us were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:3-4)
When you surrendered your life to Christ, the Bible says that your old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that you should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin (Romans 6:6-7) .
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God. (Hebrews 6:1)
Next, let’s talk about why we need to rely on Him. To the carnal mind, giving up a lifestyle of sin to obey the Lord’s commandments initially seems hard. However, the Lord promised to send us a Helper to learn how to live a life that pleases God.
If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you “another” Helper, that He may abide with you forever- The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him or knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:16)
Illustration: Do you remember when you were a kid and you first learned how to ride a bike? You kept falling, but eventually you got to a point where you learned how to ride it. For some of us, we got so good that we started riding with no hands.
So, the Lord says I’m going to send you a helper and He’s going to train you how to walk in holiness. Now let’s say you joined a gym membership and you had no clue on how to get properly fit. Well, any good fitness center is going to recommend you a personal trainer. Now, the trainer is not going to expect you to be able to lift 500 pounds on the first day you show up. He’s going to access your current condition and ask you what your fitness goals are.
Now, when it comes to your spiritual goal, it should be the same as what Paul said.
14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:14)
